25 years ago to the week – just off the back of 12 months travelling, I was about to enter the world of recruitment, and not knowing my arse from my elbow.
After an intense round of interviews with SThree / Progressive, I was an IT Recruitment Consultant. Had my own business cards to prove it too!
As I was given the ‘white pages’ for the Isle of Man and told to start calling, I doubted I’d still be in this lovely industry many years later.
It was tough. I mean really tough. But, the learnings in those early days built a resilience and an attitude to never give up (even though I wanted to on several occasions).
I stumbled through, making many a mistake along the way, but I stuck with it, and recruitment has given a fantastic career to date. Thanks to some good luck and determination.
We’re in a tough market currently, anyone who tells you differently is telling porkies. But it’s no harder now, than it was then.
If you’d have told skinny/young Frank that recruitment would give him an Australian passport, travel the world, be mortgage free etc etc, he wouldn’t have believed you, or cared at the time.
All he could focus on was keeping his job and ensuring the Uni and travel debt was paid off. The future was for old people.
Now, as an old person, all I’d say to anyone doing it tough right now is be resilient (and give the lucky rabbits foot a rub when needed).
Recruitment isn’t for everyone, and that’s fine. But, if you’ve got the self belief, stick with it as it will get easier and become more fruitful.
Fast forward a quarter of a century and some might still say I wipe my elbow when going to the toilet…
